My daughter who is in 7th grade told me a couple of days ago that her teacher threatened the class with citations if they did not do their homework assignment. Confused by this, I reached out to the principal to ask the school policy for homework citations. (It's a very small school and the principal is very involved in everything.) As this has never come up before, I just wanted some general info so that I am aware of the current policy. She told me they do have a rule about being prepared and not doing homework violates that rule. The principal then asked what teacher/class my question was regarding, so I told her.
The next day in class, in front of everyone, my daughter's teacher called her out about my conversation with the principal. She was mortified when I picked her up from school. Apparently the teacher then 'clarified' what the citation consequences were for, but per my daughter, it was not what she had said the day prior.
First off, is receiving citations for not completing work the new normal? In my day, if you didn't do you work or study for a test, the result was a bad grade and maybe having to stay in for recess, not a citation.
Also, does it not seem highly unprofessional for a teacher to single out a student in class with the obvious intention to embarrass her?Had I not been asked what class it was regarding, I would have never mentioned it to the principal in the first place.
Side note - this is the same teacher who sometimes asks the students for a piece of gum when gum is banned from school grounds and earns the kids immediate citations.....
