Can’t start up from external

Mac mini, 2024, 16gb memory, 500gb drive, latest Tahoe
My internal hard drive was slow. First Aid couldn’t help. So I cloned to external - a Micron 1tb. The external worked fine.
Then I erased the internal to freshen it from external.
Now the internal is empty and I cannot boot from it of course. But I can’t boot from the external either.
I hold the power button on restart and get the Choose Startup Disk window but after a half dozen attempts, nothing.
Any ideas?
