As you all remember, they recently discontinued my favorite sausage and I have been struggling to find a replacement. I've had some interesting alternatives but nothing at all close to the originals.
I've had a couple of bad sausages...not "bad"...just not "tasty". They were interesting to try but I definitely wouldn't go back to get seconds.
This search has gone on for most of the year at this point with no success.
I found a garlic and onion sausage that was quite nice, and I'd definitely go back for it a second time, but its $3 a sausage and, at that price, I could literally just buy the sausages I like that are made by the shop where they were invented and have them shipped to my house!
So, the search continues.
I was looking in the local supermarket the other day and looked in the cheese aisle of all places. I wasn't actually looking for cheese, but I was just mindlessly wandering around the supermarket looking at things and that is when I found sausages in the cheese aisle. They have sausages in the meat section, which is where I'd typically look, but these were more upmarket sausages - the kind that come in natural casings and sold in long strands, tied together in a braid.
Granted, this makes them annoying to have to separate to cook, but the package contained twelve instead of four, so that was a bonus!
I separated them all and air fried them for 25 minutes. They came out lovely and slightly charred on the top. They smelled good too! I put one on a buttered bun with some spicy mustard and it was absolutely delicious!
I had never had Slovenian sausages, so I googled them before I bought them and it seems that they are a traditional pork sausage with a hint of heat - that it gets from black pepper! That's good for me, since I can't really do the spicy chili pepper varieties. They're not as hot as the one I really like which get their heat from ground hot mustard. They have a lovely bite and they smelled delicious when they were cooking.
I only eat one a day, so 11 days from now I'll have to decide if I want to get some more!
Not really, I'll probably just freeze ten of them and microwave one when I'm in the mood.
The only problem with that is, if I go through too long without having a sausage, the buns will go moldy!
The buns have been their own nightmare side project. The company that makes them has gone out of business too! There is another company that makes identical ones - I actually think the one company just sold them to the company that went out of business and that company would put its own label on the buns. So, I can still get the buns but, now they can only be gotten in two places and only about one bag a week...if I'm lucky!
Not to mention that getting to the place that sells the buns is entirely inconvenient and a real hassle to make a special trip just for it!
But would it be likely that I'd go through all this trouble if both the sausages and the buns weren't so good!?
What about you, dear reader, what food do you eat regularly that you'd struggle to replace if you could no longer get it?
